Dear Mr. Whitcher:

Thank you for correspondence regarding your opposition to increasing Michigan's beer tax to help balance the state budget. I appreciate the trust you place in this office and your concerns with regard to the Fiscal Year 2010 State of Michigan budget.

Although the Governor previously mentioned the proposal of an increase in the current beer tax, at this time, there is no legislation pending before the Michigan Legislature which seeks to increase the current excise tax placed on beer.

As you know, Michigan is currently facing a several billion dollar shortfall. Earlier this summer, the Senate put forth our plan to balance the budget, which includes tough, but necessary cuts to almost every department of government. Recently, I met with Governor Granholm and Speaker Dillon in the spirit of cooperation and with the intention of moving the legislative process forward in an effort to resolve the budget.

Balancing and appropriating money in the state budget is one of the most important duties of the Michigan Legislature, and one that I take very seriously. My colleagues and I in the Senate are committed to first exhausting all possible options for savings before considering any proposals for increased revenue. Rest assured, I will continue to fight against increased spending and will take the time and thought to restructure expenditures in a responsible and prudent matter.

Again, thank you for your correspondence. I will be sure to keep your correspondence on hand as we continue these discussions. Citizen input is vital to the success of our state and I encourage you to remain active in your pursuit of this issue. Should you have future concerns or questions regarding state government matters, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Michael D. Bishop

Majority Leader

State Senator, 12th District
